Vijjadhammakaya or 'Dhammakaya meditation' which had been thought to be lost some time 500 years after the passing away of the Buddha is a burgeoning area of interesting research in Buddhist Studies. The history began in 1917 during World War I (1914-1918). In the eleventh year of his ordination, during the rainy season, Phra Mongkholthepmuni (Sot Bhikkhu) stayed at Bangkhuwieng temple, Nonthaburi province, Thailand. There, he began to practice meditation using the Visuddhimagga (The Path of Purification), the great treatise on Theravada Buddhist doctrine. Having reflected to his eleven years-unsuccessful meditation practice, on the full-moon day of September, he sat himself down in the main shrine hall of the temple and allowed his mind to go deeper through the pathway at centre of the sphere at the centre of his body, until it is said he discovered the dhammakaya, the inner body of enlightenment, that is eternal and free from defilement.
