Ihre mystisch-religiösen Bilder zeigen meistens Pflanzen und offenbaren eine suggestive Phantasie. Eines ihrer bekanntesten Werke heißt Der rote Baum und ist um 1927/1928 entstanden. Das Original wird im Musée National d Art Moderne in Paris, aufbewahrt. Wegen einer chronischen Psychose mit Größenwahnvorstellungen und Verfolgungswahn verbrachte Séraphine die letzten zehn Jahre ihres Lebens in einer psychiatrischen Anstalt.
