En 1956, le photographe Harry Callahan (1912-1999), alors directeur du département de photographie de l'Institute of Design de Chicago aux États-Unis, reçoit une bourse de la Fondation Graham. Sur les conseils d'Edward Steichen, il part en Europe et séjourne à Aix-en-Provence de septembre 1957 à juillet 1958 où il conçoit une série d'études sur les vues urbaines, la nature, et de nombreux portraits de sa femme Eleanor. Trente-six ans plus tard, découvrant le chantier de la Maison européenne de la photographie à Paris, Harry Callahan revisite ses archives, sélectionne cent trente tirages d'époque, sous le nom de "French Archives", et fait don de l'ensemble au nouveau musée.
