Eine Kritik dieses Werkes erfolgt sowohl textimmanent, als auch durch den Vergleich mit Erziehungsratgebern der Jahrhundertwende, mit modernen Erziehungsratgebern sowie mit der Neuauflage von 1962 unter dem Titel "Die Mutter und ihr erstes Kind".Es wird dargelegt, wie die nationalsozialistische Einstellung Haarers in ihrem Buch erkennbar wird. Die Kritik der Psychologin Sigrid Chamberlain an Johanna Haarers Erziehungsstil wird vorgestellt.
