§Munich at the turn of the century: The who's who of German Expressionism assembles in the art metropolis of the hour, among them the young Alexej von Jawlensky (1865-1941). This exceptional artist stays in the city on the Isar for two decades, maturing into a world-renowned artist whose landscapes, still lifes, and portraits are among the principal works of classical modernism today. Born in St. Petersburg, he settles in 1896 in Munich with the painter Marianne von Werefkin, who encourages and supports him unswervingly. There he makes the acquaintance of Wassiliy Kandinsky, Franz Marc, and Gabriele Münter among others. During exchanges with the others Jawlensky finds himself and his still uniquely colourful and powerful paintings.
