Wuthering Heights is the only novel by Emily Brontë. First published in 1847, the novel's title refers to the Yorkshire manor on the moors which forms the focal point of the story. Wuthering is a Yorkshire word referring to turbulent weather. Often considered a love story, it is really more a tale of revenge. The story follows the life of its main character, Heathcliff, from childhood (about seven years old) to his death in his late thirties. He rises in his adopted family and then is reduced to the status of a servant, running away when the young woman he loves (Catherine) decides to marry another. He returns later, rich and educated and sets about gaining his revenge on the two families that he believed ruined his life. Now considered a classic of English literature, this publication of Wuthering Heights is part of the Qualitas Classics Fireside Series, where pure, ageless classics are presented in clean, easy to read reprints.
