In the last forty years, south-west England has been the focus of some of the most interesting work on the early modern household in Britain. Its remarkable wealth of vernacular buildings has been the object of much investigation, alongside its rich collection of probate inventories and other documents; while productive excavations of household good from this period have thrown light on the patterns of consumption of ceramics, glass and metalwork. The essays in this volume consider the form and development of the early modern house, and the interiors of such houses; the forms of ornament; and artefacts such as pottery and table-glass. John Allan is Consultant Archaeologist to the Dean and Chapter of Exeter Cathedral.
