Walter Willson Cobbett (1847-1937) played an§important role in the §British Musical Renaissance by his initiation of a§series of chamber §music competitions, beginning in 1905, each of which§required the §composition of a phantasy. The phantasy was Cobbett''s§reinvention of §an older genre from England''s past, the fancy, or§fantasia. A vast §number of new British chamber compositions was§generated from §these competitions. Cobbett also commissioned eleven§phantasies §from British composers, sponsored prizes for chamber§music §compositions at the Royal College of Music, and§established the §endowed medal for services to chamber music issued§annually by the §Worshipful Company of Musicians. In examining these§competitions §and compositions in detail, Cobbett''s passion for§British chamber §music and his contribution to its lasting legacy are§revealed.
