This book covers a wide range of hot topics in the field of Vehicular ad hoc networks (VANETs), spanning from the motivations, to the state of the art and design challenges, to the open issues and future research and development perspectives. The book intends to introduce the peculiarities of vehicular environments and to describe the US IEEE standards and their European counterpart from ETSI. The editors also give emphasis to a critical analysis of decentralized congestion control techniques, recently proposed by the standards and in the literature to address congestion phenomena that adversely affect the reliable and timely delivery of cooperative safety messages. The potentialities and weaknesses of LTE/LTE-A as an alternative and/or complementary technology to 802.11p will be discussed, by surveying standard documents and preliminary literature solutions. In addition, methodologies and tools for VANETs performance evaluation, preliminary real-world implementations, simulators (network and channel modeling), supporting tools (e.g., cloud-based) and novel information-centric evaluation methodologies and metrics aimed at improving the realism of performance evaluation are covered.
