Excerpt from Transactions of the Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene, Vol. 6: April, 1913 Since the end of the 18th century, when zanetti and gherardini5 thought that bad food, aided by absence of hygiene, was the definite cause of pellagra, this theory has often been discussed. The recent developments in connection with beri-beri have caused me to wonder anew whether we have not here to deal with another disease due to deficiency of nutrition. I therefore ventured to express this view in a paper I was asked to contribute to the Conference on pellagra held in Columbia, South Carolina, in October, 1912.
