The work focuses on local poor people. It identifies thecorrelation between tourism and poverty alleviation by tracing thecash flows to the local poor, reviews the social and environmentaleffects of tourism on the local area and establishes acommunity-based sustainable tourism-eliminating poverty strategyframework. One of most important findings is that local householdsdo get benefits from tourism development but the poor people havethe substantial disadvantages in sharing this benefit. The casestudy region in China is a typical representation of thecombination and overlapping of the multiple needs for tourismdevelopment, poverty reduction and biodiversity conservation, whichare faced by many other developing countries in the world, it isexpected that the findings and recommendations can be applied toother regions in China, other developing countries, as well asdisadvantage groups in some developed countries.
