Outlining the four fundamental concerns of the study of theology - with representation, history, ethics and transcendence - this book examines each of these concerns in the light of contemporary critical theory. What becomes evident, as the theological implications of various critical theories is assessed, is the challenge and provocation to the study of theology presented by these thinkers. The book points the way to the future of theological study within a cosmos re-enchanted by postmodernism. The first edition of Theology and Contemporary Critical Theory (1996) was highly acclaimed and established the author as one of the leading thinkers in this field. For this second edition the text has been completely revised to take account of more recent work by the theorists discussed in the first edition. In addition the work of four other critical theorists is examined: Judith Butler, Michel de Certeau, the New Historicists and Jean-Luc Nancy.
