The Fabrication of the Modern Media investigates the development of the theater and press in France during the revolutionary era (1760-1835) with the aim of demonstrating that the construction of the modern media exercized a tempering influence on theaticality and personal expression. The first part of the book traces the growth of the theater through a variety of perspectives including civic life and spectacle, the theatrical enterprise or political economy of the theater, audience attendance and participation and the policing of theaters. The second part of the book deals with the relationship of the theater and the press. Proceeding chronolgoically, it looks at the attitudes of reviewers and theater critics towards the development of the drama, Gothic drama, melodrama and Romantic drama as well their influence on actors and audiences.
