Through a multi-textual focus on Syrian director Muhammad Malas and his work, this book endeavors to shed light upon Syria and Syrian cinema's place in global cinema, Syrian politics, and contemporary cultural issues. Malas comes at a critical moment when film directors of his generation are passing away before being properly written into global film history, and Syria has become a metaphor for many crucial global concerns such as refugees, "Islamic radicalism," and catastrophe. The approach in this book will be multi-faceted, linking to clips from Malas's films as well as providing context for the significant historical and political issues that relate directly to his work. The book aims to produce an interactive text by the inclusion of primary documents (maps, film scripts, memorabilia, photographs from behind the scenes shooting), film clips, and a chapter written by Malas himself (translated into English from Arabic). Whether looking at his films on the pioneers of Syrian art movements or his cinematic ode to the city of Aleppo, this book will reveal how Malas is an auteur connected to global cinema.
