The need to create classroom environments that aresafe for all students persists. Students withemotional or behavior disorders, many of whom arenot receiving special education services nor, perhaps, even qualify for them, have a seriouseffect on both the short term (teaching lessons) andlong term (teaching these students to manage theirlives) goals of our schools. The time and energydevoted to academics has supplanted the alreadylittle time spent on the social, behavioral andemotional needs of students. To address thisdilemma, a mental health curriculum would seem to beintegral to any school (reform) curriculum. Thisbook presents a classroom mental health program thatis designed to both address the emotional andbehavioral problems of students and, moreimportantly, to provide the tools necessary to beable to prevent and manage them. The educationalcomponent of Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy (REBT)is concerned with examining the way attitudes, beliefs, and values influence feelings andperceptions. The author of this book sought toexplore whether REBT could be successfully utilizedin a special education classroom setting.
