In the U.S., minority students lag behind theirWhite and Asian counterparts academically at alllevels of the educational structure. Research hasshown that the perceptions and attitudes teachershold regarding their students can have a significantimpact on their students performance andachievement. Studies have found that teachers oftencarry negative stereotypes regarding non-Asianminority students, which seem to contribute to thefailure and discouragement amongst these students. This research found that non-education majors hadsignificantly higher, or more positive, affectiveracial attitudes than education majors.Additionally, students with higher aptitudes, asmeasured by ACT or SAT score, reported higher, ormore positive, affective attitudes than those withlower aptitudes, and students who had never taken aneducation course reported higher, or more positive, affective racial attitudes than students who hadtaken education courses.Educational professionals should re-evaluate thecurrent diversity education requirements andopportunities at both the university and schooldistrict levels.
