This book introduces the physical effects and the fundamentals of piezoelectric sensors and actuators, presenting several typical piezoelectric materials such as quartz crystals and piezoceramics. Different modeling approaches and methods are described to precisely predict the behavior of piezoelectric devices by computer. Furthermore, it gives an overview of important applications of piezoelectric sensors and actuators. In particular, the studied application fields are - process measurement technology, e.g., measurement of liquid level, - nondestructive material testing, e.g., localization of material faults, - medical therapy and diagnosis, e.g., sonogram of a fetus, - embedded piezoceramics for smart structures and - energy harvesting.
