Shift work has become a permanent and large feature§of modern-day society. In 1991 it was found that§approximately 26 percent of the South African§population work shifts of some kind (Adler, 1991:3).§ Although shift work has become prevalent, there has§been comparatively little research carried out with§regard to this topic particularly in (Potgieter,§1996:1; Van Rooyen, 2000:1). Various literature§sources indicate and highlight the vast impacts of§shift work internationally, yet literature on the§subject as seen in South Africa is limited (Van§Rooyen, 2000:3). The book explores the existing§knowledge base on shift work, exploring and§describing the experiences of shift workers and§provides guidelines for the promotion of health and§well-being amongst shift workers that ultimately§benefit the employer.
