Since the collapse of the Ottoman Empire at the end of the First World War, the Middle East, unlike any other region of the world, has been afflicted with frequent military conflict, inter-state hostility and civil wars. This book investigates the role and the impacts of the military and military regimes in the Middle East. It examines the role of the armies in Iran, Iraq, Turkey, Syria, Egypt and Israel and analyses the economic growth in the countries during 1970-2006, highlighting their main problems. The book argues that one of the main causes of the slow and stagnated economic development in the region is high military expenditure perpetuated by strong grips of armies on the politics of the region. It also maintains that strong armies have systematically hindered the development of civil and modern political institutions in the region. The book is designed to contribute and support political dialogue and democratic solution for the main conflicts in the region.
