Die neuscholastische Metaphysik spielt für die Philosophie im 17. Jahrhundert eine herausragende Rolle; zeitgleich formieren sich die Anfänge des modernen wissenschaftlichen Weltbildes. Diese Studie untersucht am Beispiel des Anatomen Francis Glisson (ca. 1597-1677) die Bedeutung der Schulmetaphysik für die Entstehung der neuen Naturphilosophie. Es wird gezeigt, dass Glisson seine retrospektive Substanztheorie aus seinem Selbstverständnis als Wissenschaftler heraus entwickelt. Damit wirft die Arbeit ein überraschendes Schlaglicht auf die intellektuellen Formationsbedingungen der neuzeitlichen Wissenschaften.
