Students at a Swedishuniversity were subjects in astudy about learning limits of functions. Thestudents were enrolled in their first universitycourse in mathematics. They studied algebra andcalculus. Students solve problems and work withtheory to learn mathematics. There are many possibleproblems for the students to handle including thenotion of function, the formal definition and limitsas unattainable values for functions. The students perceptions were investigated in terms of traces ofconcept images through interviews and problemsolving. The results imply that most students foundations were not sufficiently strong for them tounderstand the concept of limit well enough to beable to form coherent concept images. Many studentsdid not possess enough knowledge about limits tosolve and explain solutions to non-standardproblems. Some students arrived at correct answersthrough erroneous reasoning.
