Friends play a crucial role in the lives of international students and provide vital support to those studying abroad. However, the concept, meaning and nuances of friendship have been altered considerably and are increasingly challenged by our increasingly mobile and interconnected world. This book explores the characteristics of friendship networks of international doctoral students by analysing the relationships between these students and their friends both in the country of education and across several national borders. It describes the complex structure and composition of friendship networks and the multidimensional nature of supportive practices. The results of the analysis of such networks and supportive practices are then used to illustrate the interplay between the structure and dynamics of social networks and the personal features of their members in resource flow processes, arguing that transnational student friendship involves a wide variety of forms, patterns and practices, with meanings shaped and reshaped through mobility, international education and transnational formations.
