Excerpt from Hints on Amalgamation and the General Care of Gold Mills I am encouraged to bring out a new edition of this book, from the receipt of numerous letters of approval from competent critics, and the demand for copies since the first edition was exhausted. However, on close study and thought, I doubt whether any change of the present text would be of advantage, either in clearness or to add to its scope in the field that I tried to cover. It was first written in 1898, and of course, there have been improvements in machinery and methods since then, but neither of these classes of advancement alter the routine of the vital principles of amalgamation or the general care of the mill. For this reason, I have tried to bring the status of gold milling up to date in an appendix; as the only important change, speaking broadly, is the present advocacy of sliming all the ore, as against the earlier practice of restricting to a minimum the production of slimes in all operations, and the separation of the sands from the slime, which unavoidably occur, by spitzkasten or spitslutten.
