The profession of art therapy was influenced and developed byfigures in the fields of art education, visual art, andpsychoanalysis. Erik H. Erikson is a figure who was trained in allthree of these areas; yet it seems that contemporary art therapistsare unaware of how valuable his life story and writtencontributions are to the field of art therapy. This work exploresthe historical context surrounding the life of Erikson, histraining in various fields, his difficult experience trying tochoose an identity between artist and psychoanalyst, and thewritten works that he contributed later in his life. As well, JoanErikson\'s influence on his work has been examined. Erin Kuri\'sresearch demonstrates that Erikson\'s training and experientialknowledge in visual art influenced his clinical observations andwritten works throughout his life. By examining the ways in whichhe perceived his work through the eyes of an artist, current arttherapists may be inspired to view his life work as an invaluableresource for the study and practice of art therapy.
