Focusing on assessment procedures relating to people in residential and supported accommodation settings in the community, and those preparing to move to such settings, this book goes beyond general guidelines to the day-to-day practical issues facing those carrying out assessments. It looks at both the skills and knowledge required to help staff to understand the broader meaning and context of specific assessment tasks. It also makes the link between assessment techniques and procedures and care management, approaching the problem in two ways: What kind of assessment will provide the information for effective resource allocation and planning? What kind of resource allocation procedures will ensure the closest links with individual client assessments? The book is informed by recent research, including major research funded by the Scottish Office, and implications are also drawn from the author's broader experiences of working with other client groups, particularly elderly people, people with physical as well as multiple disabilities, people with mental health problems and people with HIV and AIDS.
