One of the most distinctive features that characterizes 21stcentury is globalization. The sweeping power of globalization notonly changes the material conditions of human beings but alsoradically modifies how people position themselves and what they canshare in a newly-defined world village. Also, ground-breakingdevelopments in technology bring us many revolutionary means tocommunicate with each other, and this has become the impetus forestablishing new relationships among people. At the core of thisprocess, the existence of a global language as a medium ofcommunication has become a critical agenda. This study focuses onthe relationship between globalization and the diaspora of Englishin South Korea. More specifically, this study investigates theattitudes of Korean students toward English in six differentenvironments: social/cultural, economical, linguistic, pedagogical,technological, and globalizational environments. Using bothquantitative and qualitative research methods, this studyillustrates the profile of English in the 21st century globalizedKorea.
