This volume will highlight studies of evolution by scholars in and around the U.S. South, with a special focus on Alabama, drawing attention to local resources and issues that are being, or should be, addressed in the region with regard to evolution outreach and education. We focus on Alabama and the South more generally because, among U.S. states-not just those of the South-Alabama ranks, by far, one of the worst at evolution literacy. The book is organized into two main parts, in which the first part outlines the sociocultural context of the region that has influenced the current status of evolution in the region. This includes examinations of recent historical events and attitudes and current investigations of attitudes toward evolution and evolution education. The second part highlights the diversity of disciplines that apply evolutionary principles and investigations in the sciences and humanities that have been conducted here.
