In June 2000, the German Government and the Germanelectricity supply industry signed the ?Consensus of Opting out ofNuclear Energy?. This agreement has the objective to phase outnuclear power plants and to replace nuclear power with anincreasing share of renewables, promoting energy efficiency andenergy saving. Sylke Hausmann investigates whether the scenario ofabandoning nuclear energy is a realistic, reasonable and feasibleaim. The question is put into the context of the current Germanenergy situation and relates to current political and geopoliticalissues, such as security of supply and Kyoto Protocol targets. Theauthor conducted interviews with German politicians of all majorparties, non-governmental organisations as well as Germanelectricity suppliers. This book is addressed to politicians, energy companies, ecological groups and communities, and everybodyinterested in nuclear energy in Germany and the German energysituation.
