Retribution is a central theme in the study of religion and pervades the work of the earliest Christian historians. 'Early Christian Historiography' examines the logic of retribution within the works of key figures in Christian history: St Luke, the first Christian historian, the Roman historian Eusebius, Rufinus of Aquileia and St Augustine of Hippo. It engages with questions such as: is there reason and order within the universe; do human actions matter; is there a god of retribution? The writings of the earliest Christians are compared with early pagan history-writing and the Christian concerns of forgiveness and redemption are examined in light of theories of retribution. This authoritative study will be invaluable to historians of religion, theology and ancient history.
