Universities across the world are engaging in a process of internationalization and are reaching out to attract the best talent in students and staff. Due to the status of English, Anglophone universities have most profited from this trend, which has had a forceful impact on student demographics in individual classrooms. This book reviews and summarizes what we know about interaction in the Anglophone university classroom, drawing on publications from applied linguistics, education studies and psychology. The book describes the challenges students and tutors face in the classroom, how culture has been invoked as an explanatory variable and how blame for miscommunication has been shifted to the newcomer. Ultimately, the book affirms that the classroom itself can play a central role in addressing these challenges, leading not only to better relationships on campus, but to the development of essential skills for a globally connected world.
