The combination of Sandro Botticelli's (1445-1510) draughtsmanship and Dante's Divine Comedy created one of the greatest treasures of the Italian Renaissance. Together with numerous opulent manuscripts, it was once part of the collection owned by the Scottish Duke of Hamilton, which was to be auctioned in 1882. With its acquisition, the Berlin Museums were able to land a sensational coup: this volume traces the context of the purchase and reveals a selection of Botticelli's most impressive sheets as well as the magnificent manuscripts belonging to the illuminator's finest and most significant works.
