This is the first major atlas illustrating the current knowledge on the cellular and molecular mechanisms of human developmental hematopoiesis after more than thirty years.§After presenting the principles of developmental hematopoiesis, the atlas focuses on lineage-specific processes. Human data are referred to whenever possible. Since a great deal of information on developmental hematopoiesis has been discovered in other species including transgenic animals, those data are used for the atlas as well.§Fantastic images of the developmental hematopoiesis in the human embryo, fetus or neonate are borrowed from the renowned Atlas of Human Hemopoietic Development by Kelemen et al. Current data on the molecular mechanisms are summarized in figures or line drawings. Whereas figures are presented on the left page, charts or line drawings summarizing the underlying molecular mechanisms will be shown on the corresponding right page. §Including ca. 300 full-color figures§Plus DVD with additional material. §The atlas provides a valuable source of basic information on human embryonic/fetal blood development for clinicians and researchers in the field of pediatrics, neonatologists, hematologists and stem cell researchers, for example when dealing with the clinical implications of unrelated donor stem cell transplantation.
