The aim of this book is to develop a low-cost zircon reinforced aluminum metal matrix composites with superior wear resistance property. For this purpose, Al-4.5wt%Cu alloy has been selected as matrix material. To overcome the settling of zircon particles in liquid alloy, two different approaches have been practiced, i.e., (i) controlling of processing parameters and (ii) addition of silicon carbide particles which have comparatively low-density value. Effect of zircon particle size and amount on particle distribution, particle settling, matrix structure, coefficient of thermal expansion and age hardening behaviour of Al-4.5wt%Cu alloy has been studied. Extensive studies on abrasive and dry sliding wear behaviour of the composites have been conducted and mechanism of wear has been evaluated by microstructural observation. Corrosion studies of the composites in 3.5% NaCl salt solution have been carried out at room temperature and the results have been correlated with microstructures. An effort has also been made to recycle the aluminum alloy from the composite scraps.
