The use of large amounts of aluminium in mass-produced cars has been predicted frequently, but has not, as yet, come about. It has been proven that aluminium can be used to replace steel for wheels, body panels, space frames, and bumpers; as a substitute for cast iron in engine blocks, sump covers and the like and to replace copper in radiators and heat exchangers. In most instances, however, there is a significant increase in cost, but the aluminium producers and the car manufacturers have worked together to narrow the cost gap by improving alloy performance, improving designs to make full use of the forms in which aluminium is available, improving techniques of casting, joining and surface treatment and improving the fundamental understanding of formability, adhesion, fatigue, corrosion and so on. This book describes the progress made in this field in Germany in recent years, with ample acknowledgement of the work of others in the UK, the USA and Japan.
