Alfred Seiland: Imperium Romanum. Opus Extractum II

Was als interessante Auftragsarbeit für das New York Times Magazine seinen Anfang nahm - er sollte damals die Filmarbeiten an der HBO Serie "Rome" in Cinecittŕ begleiten - wurde zu einer langfristigen fotodokumentarischen Beschäftigung mit den Hinterlassenschaften und Auswirkungen der römischen Kultur, Architektur und Kunst im 21. Jahrhundert. Mithilfe seiner perfekten, teilweise ironischen Bild- und Farbkomposition fixiert Seiland römische Gebäude, Landschaften und Kunstobjekte im Spiegel der Jetztzeit und nützt sie als Ausgangspunkte für seine tiefgreifende visuelle Dokumentation und Interpretation der römischen Kultur. Dieses Buch (Band 2 einer Reihe, die 2013 mit Opus Extractum I begonnen wurde) stellt 58 Orte in 21 Ländern vor, die Alfred Seiland im Zuge seiner Recherchen und auf den Reisen der vergangenen zehn Jahre, auf dem Gebiet des ehemaligen Römischen Reiches und darüber hinaus, besucht hat. Die Bilder werden von längeren Texten begleitet, die sichtbare, unsichtbare, historische und zeitgenössische Bezüge erläutern. Der britische Historiker Philip Parker, nimmt den Leser in seinem Essay mit auf eine Zeitreise durch das römische Reich. "Imperium Romanum" ist ein grosses fotodokumentarisches Projekt - konzeptuell, zeitlich und räumlich - das die Wurzeln und Zusammenhänge der Europäischen und Mediterranen Kulturen untersucht und das vor dem Hintergrund der aktuellen, politischen Entwicklungen gesehen und interpretiert werden kann. What started as an interesting assignment to accompany the shooting of the HBO Series Rome in Cinecittŕ, for the New York Times Magazine, turned into a thorough, longterm photographic research to the remains of Roman architecture and culture in the early twenty-first century. Using his brilliantly imaginative, some- times ironic photographic language, taking buildings, landscapes, and artefacts of the Roman Empire as a reference level, Alfred Seiland creates an intense in-depth visual documentation. The photographs always shot with an analogue large-format camera illustrate the conflict of ancient and modern, destruction and conservation, and the longevity of the Roman Empire and its legacy for succeeding societies. This book is the second in a series of Opus Extractum volumes. It explores twenty-one countries all over the territory of the former Roman Empire. All pictures are accompanied by detailed explanatory captions which make references to both historical and contemporary aspects of each work. Ce qui avait commencé comme une mission intéressante d'accompagnement du tournage de la série HBO Rome ŕ Cinecittŕ, pour le compte du New York Times Magazine, s'est transformé en une recherche photographique détaillée de longue haleine sur les vestiges d'architecture romaine et de culture romaine en ce début de xxie sičcle. S'appuyant sur son langage photographique brillamment imaginatif, ironique parfois, et prenant des édifices, paysages et objets de l'Empire romain comme niveau de référence, Alfred Seiland crée une documentation visuelle intense qui aborde les choses en profondeur. Les photographies, toujours prises avec un appareil analogique grand format, illustrent le conflit entre ancien et moderne, destruction et sauvegarde, ainsi que la longévité de l'Empire romain et l'héritage qu'il a transmis aux sociétés qui lui ont succédé. Ce livre est le deuxičme d'une série de volumes Opus Extractum. Il passe en revue vingt-et-un pays répartis sur l'ensemble du territoire de l'ancien Empire romain.
