The present volume presents a comprehensive comparative account of root nodule morphology, anatomy, microbiology, nitrogenase activity and cross infection relationships between woody legumes viz, Albizia lebbeck (L.) Benth., Pithecellobium dulce (Roxb.) Benth., Samanea saman (Jack.) Merill and Dalbergia sisso Roxb. Events involved in nodule morphogenesis have been demonstrated with clear light, scanning and electronmicroscopic pictures. Conventional standard methods have been used in culturing and characterization of bacterial isolates from nodules, including their sensitivity against different antibodies. Cross infection experiments were performed in modified chillum for assemblies under controlled aseptic conditions. Rhizobial isolates from the four species were used in inter cross infection experiments in order to compare the symbiotic effectiveness of the strains in terms of optimum nodulation and nitrogen fixation.
